Abstract

High-bulk density thermoplastic polymeric resin particles are made by mixing low-bulk density thermoplastic resin powders of polyolefins or vinyl halide polymers with a solvent to form a gel-like to fluid solution, agitating the solution with an inert liquid which is a nonsolvent for the polymer and the polymer solvent while heating to below the melting temperature of the polymer, controlling the agitation so that the gel-like to fluid solution is dispersed throughout the inert liquid to form droplets from 0.02 to 0.25 inch average diameter, evaporating the solvent from the droplets at below the melting temperature of the polymer while maintaining a two-phase system by replacing inert liquid lost by co-evaporation with the polymer solvent, and separating the resulting high-bulk density particles from the inert liquid. Specified resins are polyethylene, polypropylene and vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer. The solvent is preferably capable of being steam distilled, e.g. toluene, xylene, hexane, heptane and kerosene and the nonsolvent is preferably water. The polyolefins may be prepared by the low-pressure process.
