Abstract

Adhesives, especially suitable for wall-papers, comprise a major proportion of an adhesive water-soluble cellulose derivative and a minor proportion of a high polymeric substance containing hydroxyl groups, so modified by treatment with a cross-linking aldehyde or ketone that it is insoluble, or of reduced solubility, in water, but is swellable in water. The polymeric substance containing hydroxyl groups is exemplified by the water-soluble cellulose derivatives carboxymethyl-, carboxyethyl-, sulphomethyl-, sulphoethyl-, methyl-, ethyl-, hydroxyethyl-, hydroxypropyl-, cyanoethyl-, methylhydroxy-ethyl-, ethylhydroxyethyl-, methylethyl-, methylcarboxymethyl-, hydroxyethylcarboxymethyl- and methylhydroxypropylcelluloses, alginates, pectin, carragheen, gum tragacanth, gum arabic, agar, karaya gum, ghatti gum, locust bean gum and guar gum, modified starches such as pasted starch, dextrin, chlorinated starch, sulphonated starch, acetylated starch, methyl starch, hydroxyethyl starch and hydroxypropyl starch, and polyvinyl alcohol. The aldehydes and ketones are exemplified by glyoxal, formaldehyde, methyl glyoxal and acetonylacetone.
