Abstract

1,228,849. Coated regenerated cellulose sausage casing. TEE PAK Inc. 31 Dec., 1968 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 61875/68. Heading B2E. A dyed fibrous or non-fibrous regenerated cellulose sausage casing is coated, prior to drying, with a water-soluble or water-dispersible, polymeric, polyfunctional organic compound, e.g. gelatin, hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, a natural gum, sodium cellulose xanthate, or polyacrylic acid, and reacting the polyfunctional organic compound with a difunctional or polyfunctional cross-linking agent to insolubilise a coating thereon. The coating reduces dye-rub-off and improves the adhesion of subsequently applied flexographic or lithographic printing. The cross-linking agents may comprise compounds containing as functional groups isocyanate, isothiocyanate, epoxy, chloro-epoxy, acyl halide, acyl amide, ester, ketene, imino, halogen or acid anhydride groups. Less reactive cross-linking agents may be applied in admixture with the polymeric, polyfunctional coating material in aqueous solution; where more reactive cross-linking agents are used the casing may first be passed through an aqueous solution of the polymeric coating material and then cross-linked in a separate treating step. The sausage casing may comprise a regenerated cellulose tubular film or a tube of fibrous paper, e.g. hemp paper impregnated and coated with regenerated cellulose. The casings may be dyed with naphthol dyes.
