Abstract
840,747. Envelopes. WILSON BROS. (PRINTERS) PTY Ltd. May 13, 1958 [May 14, 1957], No. 15368/58. Class 146(2). [Also in Group XVI] A mailing instrument 5, Fig. 11, consists of a sheet of paper one side of which has a message printed thereon and which is folded in half to enclose the message, the two halves of the sheet being sealed together around the periphery of the sheet and one of the edges being provided with a cut-away portion 4a for the insertion into the folded and sealed sheet of a letter opener or similar instrument. A machine for making the instruments 5 comprises basically a printing machine wherein the usual printing block is replaced by an adhesive applying block 1, Fig. 3, fed with adhesive by means of the original inking rollers. The sheets, after having adhesive applied, pass over a table 8, Fig. 10, of a folding and stacking unit 7 secured at the rear of the press. The sheets are conveyed by chains 9 having fingers 13 and driven by sprockets 11. The sheets are taken from the conveyer 9 and fed to a buckle folder 16 by knurled wheels 15. The folded sheets are deposited on a receiver consisting of adjustable side guides 50, sheet retainer 52 and reciprocating stackers 47, 48. A shaft 31 is driven by gearing from the adhesive applying machine and, through a chain 33, drives the roller 22 of the buckle folder and the sprocket 11. The shaft 21 of the roller 22 is connected by gearing to the shaft of the other buckling roller 23 and the feed roller 15. An eccentric 35 mounted on the shaft 31 oscillates a lever 37, pivoted at 38 and connected to a cross head 39 which supports the stackers 47, 48. The cross-head 39 carries a pair of brackets 41 connected, through a lost motion link, to pitmans 42 in turn connected to levers 43 fulcrumed at 44 and between which is journalled the shaft 14 of wheel 15. The movement of levers 43 is synchronised to lift the shaft 14 and release a sheet 5 from the rollers 15 at the time when the rollers 22, 23 begin to grip and fold the sheet. The completed instruments are then stacked against the retainer 52.
