Abstract
840,294. Detecting leaks in vessels. METAL CONTAINERS Ltd. Aug. 7, 1958, No. 25349/58. Class 106 (2). A method of testing a container 11 for leaks comprises enclosing it in a chamber 13 having a flexible wall 14 which can be brought into engagement with substantially the entire surface of the container 11, and setting up a higher pressure in the container 11 than in the chamber 13. The chamber 13 is formed by a rubber jacket 14 and a rubber top wall 15 both supported in a rigid shell 16, 17. The assembly 13, 14, 16, 17 can be raised clear of the container 11 for removal thereof, and when in the position shown in Fig. 1, the chamber 13 is sealed by the lower ends of the jacket 14 being held against the base 12 by the shell 17. The wall 14, 15, remains clear of the container around its upper rim 19 due to the shape of the rim, and the jacket is reinforced by a curved stiffening member 22 to prevent it coming into contact with the seam 21 of the container. In use, the chamber 13 is evacuated and air at atmospheric pressure is allowed into the space between the shell 16, 17 and the flexible wall 14, 15, thus pressing the wall against the container 11 apart from the points mentioned above. After a suitable time, it is detected whether gas is leaking from the container 11, e.g. by measuring the pressure in the chamber 13 or by detecting the presence of a "tracer" gas with which the container is initially supplied. Air at atmospheric pressure is then allowed into the chamber 13 and the space outside exhausted, thus removing the flexible wall from the surface of the container. A means of sealing vent holes, bung holes or other openings is also described (Fig. 4, not shown).
