840,262. Tunnel linings. BARTLETT, V. F., ANDERSON, J. K., KELL, J., [trading as MOTT, HAY & ANDERSON], AINSWORTH, A. H., and BIDDER, E. R. Oct. 10, 1958 (Oct. 11, 1957], No. 31892/57. Class 85. A tunnel lining comprises cast-iron segments which have part cylindrical or part spherical surfaces at their mating ends. Each section of lining comprises six segments 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. All the mating surfaces except those at A and B form knuckle joints as shown in Fig. 4. At the joints A and B one segment has a plane surface 28 and the other a concave part-cylindrical surface 25 (Fig. 5). When erecting the lining the segments 14 and 15 are positioned and the remaining segments erected on scaffolding. There are jacking pockets 23 in the lower segments for jacks which act agamst tne upper segments. As the four upper segments are raised cast-iron knuckle pieces 25 and wedges 29 are inserted.
