Abstract

840,194. Rotary distributers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 7, 1958 [Nov. 12, 1957], No. 35216/57. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XV] The surface of a body of electrically-conducting material is formed with a recessed pattern corresponding to a desired pattern of insulating material, the recessed pattern is filled with molten glass, and, after solidification of the glass, the surface is ground or similarly treated to provide a smooth surface. The recessed pattern may be formed by etching, milling, coining or casting. In an example, a steel disc about “-inch thick is electrolytically or otherwise etched using a resist to form a recessed pattern 0.008 to 0.010 inch deep on one surface. The resist is removed, and the recessed pattern filled to overflowing with molten glass. Known bonding techniques may be employed. After solidification of the glass, the surface is ground or otherwise machined to produce a smooth surface. The glass may be that described in Specification 817,636. As shown in Fig. 1, a disc for use in a commutator type switching arrangement comprises a pattern 1 of insulating material and a pattern 2 of metal. In use, brush-type contacts are rotated relatively to the disc.
