Abstract

840,134. Mechanical switches without quick action; switch contacts. OAK MFG. CO. March 26, 1958 [April 8, 1957], No. 9710/58. Class 38 (5). A rotary switch comprises an insulating support panel 10 carrying fixed contacts 18, 33 and a co-operating rotary member 37. The fixed contacts 18 are wedge-shaped tongues bent up from individual metal strips secured to the panel 10 by rivets 21 and prevented from turning by terminal lugs 16 bent down through apertures 22. The fixed contacts 33 are pressed up from a multiple-contact member 27 having terminal lugs 29, 30 and securing lugs 31 bent downwardly through apertures similar to those for rivets 21 of the individual contacts. The rotary member comprises a resilient part 43 of spring copper, brass or phosphor bronze having contact arms 45, 46 and 47 of curved crosssection and different lengths to provide a desired switching pattern in conjunction with the fixed contacts 18 and 33 which may also vary in length. The member 43, a metal disc 39 (shaped to correspond to the length of the contact arms), and insulating discs 40 and 38 are riveted together such that disc 40 fits in an aperture 25 in panel 10 and discs 38 and 39 retain it there, disc 39 underlying the fixed contact tongues 18 and 33. The disc 40 has a non-circular opening for accommodating an operating shaft and a number of switches may be ganged in spaced, parallel planes. In a modification (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), the metal disc 39 is replaced by a resilient member having contact-arms corresponding to member 43 such that the fixed contacts are engageable between two springy arms.
