Abstract

Chloromethyl dihydrosafrol, of the formula <FORM:0839494/IV (b)/1> is prepared by reacting dihydrosafrol or hydrogenated Ocotea Cymbarum (Brazilian Sassafras oil) at elevated temperatures, preferably 60-90 DEG C., in an aqueous system containing formaldehyde and hydrogen chloride; and (i) adjusting the HCl concentration so that its concentration in the aqueous phase at the end of the reaction is about 6.5-9.5 N; or (ii) adding calcium chloride, e.g. about 10-18%, and adjusting the HCl concentration to give a final normality of about 5.5-8.0, the aqueous phase being saturated with HCl. Formaldehyde polymers may be used as the source of formaldehyde. The acidity may be adjusted by bubbling hydrogen chloride into the solution. "Piperonyl butoxide," in which the Cl of chloromethyl dihydrosafrol is replaced by -OCH2CH2OCH2CH2OC4H9, is prepared by reacting chloromethyl dihydrosafrol with the sodium salt of diethylene glycol monobutyl with the sodium salt of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether.
