Abstract
<FORM:0839393/IV (a)/1> A filament of a synthetic linear condensation polymer is drawn as it is "edge-crimped" by passage, under tension, over and in contact with a taut wire or a filament, e.g. another run (on the path A, B, C, D, B, E) of the filament to be crimped, travelling across the path of the filament to be crimped so that the latter filament is bent over the travelling wire &c. through an angle (at least 170 degrees) thereby becoming potentially crimpable, i.e. capable of developing crimp when relaxed by release of controlling tension. The filament(s) to be crimped may be monofilament, twisted or nontwisted multifilament(s). The temperature may be raised, e.g. by passage over a hot convex plate or around a hot roller, to 15 DEG C. below the melting point of the polymer. Crimp development may be assisted by heating and/or swelling agents applied before or after knitting or weaving into fabric. Crimped filaments may be subjected to dry or moist heat-setting treatment.
