Abstract

838,976. Rigid laminates. FIRE-PROOF STEEL CO. Ltd., and GALT, G. S. May 14, 1958 [May 21, 1957], No. 16069/57. Class 140. A laminated building or like board comprises a base layer 1 of metal, such as galvanized steel, brass or copper, stabbed as at 2 to provide projecting tongues 3, a layer 4 of thermal insulating material such as asbestos cement, plywood or fibreboard or other compressed wood, and a surface layer 5 of polyester resin reinforced with mineral fibre material such as glass mat or fabric. A method of making the laminate comprises pressing a layer of unset asbestos cement on to a stabbed metal layer and allowing it to set, rolling a layer of polyester resin containing the reinforcing material on to a regenerated cellulose, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol, treated paper, or other carrier foil, superimposing the combined under layers. coated if desired with polyester resin, and curing the resin under pressure in a mould with or without heating, the carrier foil then being stripped off. For handling convenience a second foil which is stripped off before the final laminating step, may be applied to the resin layer. The carrier foil may be laid in the mould on a layer of rubber, cork sheet, exfoliated mica or granulated cork, which latter may impart a decorative finish to the resin surface. The resin may also be coloured, and may be treated to render it incombustible or selfextinguishing.
