Abstract

A low-foaming, heavy-duty detergent composition consists by weight of (a) 5-30 parts of a non-ionic surface-active compound of the formula <FORM:0838975/III/1> wherein R is hydrogen or alkyl, R1 and R2 are alkyl radicals of at least 6 carbon atoms, R, R1 and R2 containing a total of at least 14 carbon atoms, and n is the number of ethenoxy groups, generally 10-40, necessary to render the compound water-soluble, many suitable compounds being specified; (b) 20-60 parts of builders comprising alkali-metal, particularly sodium or potassium, ortho-, meta-, pyro-, or poly-phosphates, borates or perborates; (c) 10-40 parts of at least one other water-soluble inorganic salt such as sodium carbonate, bicarbonate, sesquicarbonate, chloride, sulphate or silicates; and (d) 0-5 parts of a water-soluble derivative of cellulose, starch, xylan or lichenin such as hydroxy-ethyl methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl starch, carboxy-methylcellulose or -starch or cellulose ethane sulphonic acid in the form of the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or amine salts. The composition is such that a 0.1-0.5% aqueous solution has a pH above 8.5. The compositions are usually produced in particulate form but may also be produced as solutions, for example in aqueous solutions containing alcohol.
