Abstract

b -Cyanopropionaldehyde is produced by reacting acrylonitrile, in solution in a non-alcoholic organic polar solvent which forms a complex salt with cobalt carbonyl, under the conditions of the oxo synthesis with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of cobalt carbonyl. Specified solvents are acetone and ethylene glycol methyl ethyl ether. Specification 698,279 is referred to.
