Abstract
838,551. Nuclear fusion reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 18, 1958 [June 20, 1957], No. 19512/57. Class 39(4). In a gas discharge apparatus for producing thermonuclear reaction in which a highcurrent discharge is produced in a gas, a metallic surface exposed to the discharge is formed of a multiplicity of mutually insulated metal members, each presenting to the discharge a surface having an area less than the critical area required to maintain an arc spot, mounted to overlap with the surfaces in substantially parallel planes whereby substantially no photons or ions from the discharge can penetrate the subdivided surface. In the drawing the inner surface of a metal torus wall 1 containing a ring discharge 5 has spaced from it an insulating torus 2, which may be of ceramic. A number of overlapping plates 4 each of an area less than the critical area are mounted on posts 3 sealed through the torus 2 and are arranged in four parallel banks, the mounting centres of each group of four mounting posts being at the four corners of a square. The plates are circular, but could be of any other suitable shape, and are preferably of a metal of low atomic number such as aluminium, magnesium or beryllium, The critical area is found by experiment and is of the order of a few square centimetres. Ths space between the torus 2 and the wall 1 may contain a coolant such as water to conduct heat away from the projecting ends of the posts 3. Specification 830,252 is referred to.
