Abstract

838,497. Electrically heated floor coverings. WALLER, C. A. Aug. 22, 1956 [Aug. 22. 1955], No. 24102/55. Class 39(3) An electrically heated carpet or floor covering comprises a flexible and resilient base layer over the area of which is distributed a heating element, a flexible layer of metal being located over said element and insulated therefrom to act as a heat disposal and earthing screen. As shown, Fig. 1, a base layer 1, e.g. of sponge rubber, has on one face an insulated electric heating element in five sections 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 connected by flexible bus-bars 7 and 8 to current supply leads in circuit with a thermostat 9. A flexible metal layer 10, e.g. of aluminium foil, earthed via a lead 11, lies above the insulated element. In a modification, Fig. 4, two metal layers 13 and 24, insulated by layers 14 and 23, e.g. of polythene, are disposed one on each side of a heating element 15. a resilient base layer 12 and a covering layer 26, e.g. of insulating material, decorative material such as a carpet weave, or black paint, being provided also. The heating element may comprise a layer of conducting material or an electrically conductive rubber or plastic sheet
