Abstract

838,207. Moulding firelighters. YATES, J. B. Aug. 9, 1958, No. 25649/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XII] A method of making firelighters comprising filling a combustible aggregate, e.g. peat or sawdust, into compartments formed by partitions 16 in a frame 15 which is fitted on a bottom plate 12 resting on a base 10, compressing the aggregate with a plate 18 from which blocks 19 project into the compartments, removing the compressed slab and placing it between liquid-permeable sheets, impregnating it with an inflammable liquid e.g. molten wax or naphthalene, removing it from between the sheets and sub-dividing it along the lines of weakness produced by the partitions 16. The liquid-permeable sheets may be of expanded metal and several slabs may be stacked with sheets interspaced and retained by U-clips. Impregnation is done in a boiler, with hot liquid. Holes left by dowels 11 provide draught passages in the firelighters:
