Abstract

838,066. Abrading. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. April 11, 1956 [April 11, 1955], No. 11018/56. Class 60. A contact wheel for an abrasive belt has two series 13, 14 of grooves extending angularly across the surface of its belt contacting rim, the grooves of each series being parallel, uniformly spaced and of equal width and crossing those of the other, thus forming bands 15 ; the circumferential pitch P 1 of one series is different from that P 2 of the other. The angles which the grooves of the two series form with the circumferential direction are between 45 and 75 degrees. The grooves need not be straight. The wheel may be of metal or of rubber or of a combination of such materials ; e.g. the wheel may comprise a metal hub on which is moulded a rim of resilient plastic or rubbery material. The grooves may be cut into the surface of the wheel after fabrication or they may be formed integrally with the surface at the time of fabrication ; alternatively individual pre-formed blocks may be stuck to the wheel surface in the required pattern.
