Abstract

A dry shell mould composition comprises at least one refractory material of widely differing particle sizes from the group silica, zircon, zirconia, alumina, sillincanite, mullite, kyanite, andalusite, calcined kaolin, magnesia, periclase, forsterite and fireclay grog; a high temperature binder of at least one of the group sodium and potassium silicate, sodium silicofluoride, alkali metal fluorides and phosphates, ammonium phosphates, boric acid and oxide, microcosmic salt, alkali metal borates and tetraborates, precipitated calcium fluoride and cryolite; and a low temperature binder of a thermosetting synthetic resin. Specified low temperature binders are melamine-, urea, phenol- and cresolformaldehyde resins or their mixtures, alkyds, polyester and silicone resins. A mould release agent e.g. fatty or naphthenic acids, or fluid or powdered silicones may also be included.
