The graphite core of a carbon-dioxide cooled nuclear reactor is supported within the pressure vessel, both vertically and laterally. The core normally rests upon a steel platform in the lower part of the vessel. If the reactor becomes inverted, the core is supported on a steel plate, which covers the upper surface, and which rests on the ends of the control rod guide tubes in the inverted position. Lateral movement of the core is resisted by tensioned hoop members which surround the core and which engage the sides of the pressure vessel at resilient support devices. The latter each comprise a piston and gas filled cylinder, absorb displacement forces and allow for expansion of the pressure vessel relative to the core. Each hook member is formed of segments secured together by tubular connections which permit free thermal expansion of the core. In the resilient support devices, a fall in gas pressure, due to leakage, causes the automatic engagement of a mechanical holding device to prevent lateral shift of the core.
