837,772. Tractor-trailer vehicles. HOUGHAM, G., and ANNIS, F. March 21, 1958 [April 5, 1957], No. 11258/57. Classes 79(3) and 79(5) An elongated load 3, such as a ship's keel or a pre-stressed concrete beam connects a tractor 1 with a separate rear vehicle 2 which can be steered independently of the tractor. The tractor and trailer may also be connected by a safety wire and a flexible hose for vacuum or pressure braking. As shown a steel beam 4 supports the load and is in turn supported by a swivelling bolster 5 on the tractor and a turntable 22 on the trailer. The bolster 5 consists of a member 9 connected by hinge pins 12 to a member 8 capable of rotational and limited lateral tilting movement on a king post 7 while the turntable 22 is mounted on radially arranged thrust rollers 27 and may be adjusted by a hand-operated and lockable worm gear 21 to facilitate the rounding of curves and corners. To oppose any tendency to torsional deflection on the load the turntable has two platforms separated by springs and movable about a longitudinal hinge pin. Whip on a slender load is prevented by the use of a bracing wire and laterally-disposed struts bearing on the sides of the load. The trailer may be supported as an independent unit by a wheel 15 which pivots about a vertical axis to improve manoeuvreability.
