Abstract

964,964. Vehicle suspensions. CHARLES PITT (BARTON STACEY) Ltd. July 15, 1963, No. 27998/63. Addition to 957,939. Heading B7D. Each wheel 1 of a pair of tandem wheels at each side of the rear of a semi-trailer is mounted on an arm 2 pivoted to the vehicle frame 4, the arm 2 having a rubber block 3 bearing against a block 5 supported for sliding movement by a guide 7 and connected to a ram 8 pivoted to the frame 4. In the retracted position of the rams 8, the load supporting platform of the vehicle rests upon the floor. In a modification, Fig. 4, the wheels are mounted in a sub-frame 9 pivoted at 10 to the vehicle frame 4, and the rubber block 3 of each wheel supporting arm 2 bears against a block 5 fixed to the sub-frame. An hydraulic jack 11 is interposed between the frame 4 and subframe 9 and in its retracted position holds the vehicle frame 4 in its riding position. When the jack is expanded, the frame 4 rests upon the ground for loading, as shown in Fig. 4. In the riding position, a locking pin 14 is placed through holes 13 and 14 which are brought into register. In another modification, Fig. 5, the wheel 1 is supported on an arm 2, pivoted to the frame at 15, an arm 16 also being pivoted at 15 and connected to an hydraulic ram 18 pivoted to the vehicle frame. In the expanded position of the ram, the lever 16 acts through a resilient pad 3 against an arm 17 rigid with the arm 2 to hold the vehicle frame in the riding position. When the ram is contracted, the frame rests upon the ground. A locking member 19 may be applied to the arm 16 in the riding position. In all embodiments, the semitrailer is provided with an hydraulic ram at the fore end, so that when detached from the tractor vehicle, the frame as a whole may be lowered to the ground.
