Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble sulphoxide or sulphone which is derived from a thiophenic compound and has a molecular weight of at least 200. Mineral oils mentioned are paraffinic, naphthenic, asphaltic and mixed crude petroleum fractions of between 30 S.U.S./100 DEG F. and 500 S.U.S./210 DEG F. The sulphoxide or sulphone is derived from thiophenic compounds, e.g. dibenzthiophone, which may be alkylated or hydrogenated. Preferred compounds are tetrahydrodibenzthiophen - 5 - monoxide, octahydrodibenzthiophen - 5 : 5 - dioxide, and phenylcyclohexylsulphone; they preferably constitute less than 5 wt. per cent of the composition. Optional additives mentioned are other detergent additives; V.I. improvers, e.g. "Acryloids," isobutylene polymers and alkylstyrene polymers; pour-point depressants, e.g. wax-naphthalene condensation products; corrosion inhibitors, e.g. sodium or lithium nitrite, and di-isopropyl or dicyclohexyl ammonium nitrite and olefine-maleic anhydride condensation products which may be hydrogenated; E.P. agents, preferably S- and/or P-containing organic compounds, e.g. P2S5-terpene reaction products, calcium or zinc dicyclohexyl or methylcyclohexyl thiophosphate; and anti-foam agents, e.g. organic silicone polymers such as dimethyl silicone. In examples, the three preferred compounds specified above are each added to a solvent-refined mineral lubricating oil having a Redwood I viscosity of 330 secs./140 DEG F. in amounts of 0.1 to 2 wt. per cent.
