Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil or grease and a minor proportion of one or more trithiones free from water-solubilizing substituents, of general formula <FORM:0679871/III/1> where R and R1 represent hydrogen, or aliphatic, cyclo-aliphatic or aromatic radicles or may together form a ring structure. R and R1 may be substituted by halogen atoms, alkoxy, aryloxy, keto, carbalkoxy, nitro or acylamino groups, and free from carboxy or sulphonic acid groups. Suitable compounds include 2- or 3-phenyl trithione, 3-(41methoxyphenyl) trithione, and benztrithione (also known as 2.3-dithiosulphindene). They may be used as solutions or suspensions in mineral lubricating oil (solubilizing agents being added if necessary) in amounts from 0.05-5.0 per cent by weight of the mineral lubricating oil or grease. Generally less than 1.0 per cent is sufficient, and preferably between 0.2-0.6 per cent by weight of the lubricating oil or grease. The final composition possesses extreme pressure properties. The mineral lubricating oil may be derived from paraffinic or asphaltic residues and refined by any known process such as solvent extraction, solvent de-waxing, or treatment with sulphuric acid and/or activated earth. Other additives such as pour point depressors (alkylated naphthalenes), thickeners (soaps and inorganic gels), oxidation inhibitors (2, 4 dimethyl-6-tertiary-butyl phenol and 2, 6 ditertiary butyl-4-methyl phenol), sludge dispersers (oil soluble metal soaps and oil-soluble metal phenates), anti-corrosion agents (polycarboxylic acids formed by condensing alkenes with maleic acid), viscosity index improvers (polyisobutylenes and methyl methacrylate polymers), foam preventing agents (polymeric organic silicones and metasilicates), and anti-ring sticking agents (metal soaps of alkylated salicylic acids) may be present. Also other extreme pressure additives such as chlorinated paraffin wax, calcium dichlorostearate, tricresylphosphate, bichlorophenylphosphate and 2, 4-di(trichloromethyl)-6-nitro-1, 3-benzodioxane may be added. Examples describe the performance of compositions comprising 0.26 per cent by weight of 3-(41-methoxyphenyl) trithione (equivalent to 0.1 per cent sulphur increment by weight), and conventional additives added to a high viscosity index solvent refined mineral lubricating oil.
