Abstract
An aqueous pigment resin printing paste is produced by acetalizing polyvinyl alcohol or allyl alcohol-modified polyvinyl alcohol with the addition of 0.1 to 0.5 mol. of an unsaturated aldehyde per mol. and then adding a water-dispersible pigment paste and an emulsion of thermoplastic resin and/or thermosetting paste. An aqueous solution of the acid salt of a polymeric acid amide made from polyacrylic acid ester and ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, or triethylene tetramine, may be added to the basic paste, this may be produced in the form of a salt by adding acetic or tartaric acid. The unsaturated aldehyde may be acrolein, metaacrolein, or croton aldehyde and in addition a proportion of one or more saturated aldehydes such as acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, n-butylaldehyde, isobutylaldehyde, or benzaldehyde may be added. The paste may be used in aqueous solution or as an oil in water emulsion by emulsifying with a petroleum hydrocarbon. The colouring matter may be a commercial phthalocyanine paste, Indanthrene Blue-RS, or Threne Red Violet-RH. Also the resin may have incorporated in it, a vinyl resin such as a polymer or copolymer of vinyl acetate, acrylic acid, meth-acrylic acid ester, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinylidene chloride, butadiene, or polyethylene; or a thermosetting resin such as a formaldehyde condensation product of urea, melamine, modified urea or modified melamine or a ketone resin, such as that obtained by methylolizing methyl ethyl ketone and formalin with the addition of potassium sodium carbonate.
