Abstract

A self-propelling composition capable of dispensing a powder in aerosol form comprises a finely divided powder suspended in a mixture of a liquefied propellant having a b.p. less than 65 DEG F. at atmospheric pressure and a liquid non-ionic surface-active agent. The powder should have a substantially uniform particle size not greater than 100 microns, preferably less than 25 microns, constitute 0.01-20% by weight of the composition and desirably be insoluble in the surface-active agent-propellant mixture. Many medicines are specified as powders. Particularly for water-soluble powders the moisture content of the composition should be less than 300 parts per million by weight. The propellant is preferably a fluorinated or fluorochlorinated alkane containing not more than two carbon atoms and at least one fluorine atom, i.e. a "Freon." Other propellants are named. The surface-active agent should be preferably soluble in the propellant and constitute 0.1-20% by weight of the composition and have a hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) ratio of less than 10, preferably 1-5. Many surface-active agents are named, the sorbitan oleates being preferred. An anhydrous non-reactive desiccant, e.g. silica gel, may be incorporated in the composition. The specific gravity of the powder should be at least as great as the specific gravity of the propellant, and where the specific gravity of the medicinal ingredient is less than the specific gravity of the propellant an auxiliary solid (several specified) should be added. A formula is provided for the minimum amount of auxiliary solid required in such cases. The amount of auxiliary solid employed should be 1-10, preferably 1-3, times this minimum.
