Abstract

836,859. Embossing. KUSTERS, E. June 17, 1958, No. 19293/58. Class 100(2) [Also in Group XXIX] A pressure roller 1, Fig. 1, for smoothing and embossing paper and other materials, has the whole of its length disposed in a trough-like container 8 in which a pressure liquid acts on the surface of the roller remote from a coacting roller or surface 2, the roller having means 12 preventing transverse movement thereof and means 4 for sealing its periphery and ends, whereby the roller will exercise a uniform pressure throughout its length on the material between itself and the coacting roller or surface 2. The pressure liquid extends up to the longitudinal axis of the roller which may or may not have journals mounted in bearings movable in a vertical slide. The sealing means 4, which are secured to the container by members 10 and are of elastic or resilient material, have a lip 5 provided with a portion 11 of synthetic or other suitable sealing material conforming to the contour of the roller and pressed against the roller, by the liquid. The roller is supported against transverse movement by perforated bridgepieces 12 formed on the sealing means 4 or the container. In other arrangements, the portion 11 may be carried by a resilient member 44, Fig. 4a, movable by the pressure liquid in a guide 45 or the sealing means may be formed with an upwardly extending lip 36, Fig. 9a, which is pressed against the roller by an inflatable member 43 or a strip of resilient material, such as bronze. The ends of the roller may be rounded and the sealing means continue around the ends, or the ends may be sealed by plates 6, Fig. 1, urged against the ends of the roller and sealing means 4 by springs in flexible bellows, the plates having sealing strips between themselves and the inner ends of the container. The container 8 may be vertically adjustable by means of an eccentric device and may be formed above a second container in which is liquid connected to the liquid in the container by a pipe and a space connected to a source of air to pressurize the liquid. Alternatively, the liquid in the container 8 may be pressurized by an inflatable casing 13. In another arrangement, the container is of shallow, semicircular construction, and transverse movement of the roller is prevented by a strip carried on an arm secured to the container. A slight gap may be permitted between the sealing means and the roller and liquid leaking therethrough is returned to a collecting member and pump to the container.
