836,769. Electroluminescent devices. SOC. D'ELECTRONIQUE ET D'AUTOMATISME S.A. Jan. 1, 1959 [Jan. 4, 1958; May 22, 1958], No. 54/59. Class 39(1). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL(c)] An electrical circuit device comprises a photoconductive element 1 having a median plane M passing longitudinally through an N-P junction between elements 1 and 2 and parallel to a pair of lateral electrodes 4 on the element, and two electroluminescent cells 12, 13, 14 and 12, 13, 15 adapted to be separately activated by separate signals at X and Y and symmetrically disposed with respect to the median plane M so as to illuminate the element when activated. The element 1 may be N type, e.g. of germanium or silicon and the element 2 of P type, e.g. indium formed by diffusion or recrystallisation in a groove of element 1. Application of a signal at X causes a potential difference to appear between Ti ahd T 2 , Ti becoming more positive than T 2 and application of a signal at Y causes T 2 to become more positive than Ti If signals are applied to both X and Y the effects counterbalance and there is no potential difference between Ti and T 2 . The device may be utilized for detecting anticoincidence in input signals in calculating apparatus or circuit-switching. An output signal may also be taken off the element 2 which will indicate the presence of an input signal at either X or Y or at both X and Y. The outputs Ti and T 2 are connected through circuits having equal resistance to a point of reference potential and the P type element 2 is connected by a circuit containing a resistor and a rectifier to the same reference potential. Preferably the values of the resistances in the circuits connected to Ti and T 2 are equal in value to the resistor in the circuit of element 2 and to the ratio of the product of the resistivity of the N-type material and the width between T 1 and T 2 to the product of its thickness and ratio of charge mobilities.
