Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0836530/IV (b)/1> where R is hydrogen or a C1-C4 alkyl group. The compounds are preparable by the reaction of tetrachlorohydroquinone with either an alpha-olefine oxide or with an alpha olefine chlorohydrin. Ethylene carbonate may be used as a source of ethylene oxide. Olefine oxides and chlorohydrins specified are those of ethylene, propylene, butene-(1), pentene-(1) and hexene-(1). Examples are given of the preparation of 2,21-(2,3,5,6-tetrachlorophenylenedioxy)-bis - 1 - methylethanol and 2,21 - (2,3,5,6 - tetrachlorophenylenedioxy)-diethanol.ALSO:Polyester resins are prepared by reacting a compound or mixture of compounds of general formula <FORM:0836530/IV (a)/1> where R is hydrogen or a C1-C4 alkyl group, with a substantially stoichiometric equivalent of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, such as maleic, fumaric, itaconic or citraconic acid or anhydride. The polyester resin so formed can then be copolymerized with e.g. styrene. An example is given where the alkyd resin is acetylated and then copolymerized with styrene.
