Abstract
836,380. Feeding webs. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Nov. 5, 1957 [Nov. 9, 1956], No. 34516/57. Class 100(1) [Also in Group XXXVI] An arrangement of a hold down roll 36a or 36b for co-operating with a horizontal roll 4 about which a strip of metal S passes, e.g., for delivery to an electrolytic bath 2, comprises a pair of arms 30, one adjacent each end of the roll 4, mounted for pivotal movement about aligned axes 28 parallel to the axis of the roll 4, a shaft 32 mounted on the free ends of the arms 30 and having its axis parallel to the axis of the roll 4, a pair of roll carriers 34 mounted on the shaft 32 for rotation therewith, one adjacent each end of the roll 4, the roll 36a or 36b extending between, and being rotatably mounted in, the carriers 34, and resilient means, e.g., a spring- pressed rod 58, urging the roll 36a or 36b against the strip S on the roll 4. A fixed beam 6 supports at each end an adjustable bracket 8 having flanges 14 carrying a pin 28 for the arm 30, the beam 6 also supporting brackets 44 for a shaft 42 extending the width of the bath 2. A link 46 connects each end of the shaft 42 with one arm of a two-armed latch 38 mounted on each arm 30, the other arm of the latch 38 normally bearing against the carrier 34 to prevent rotation thereof. Keyed to each end of the shaft 42 is an arm 52 to which is pivotally attached the rod 58 which is surrounded by a spring 68 acting between a washer 70 and a spring seat 62 secured to the rod 58 and fixed to the shaft 32. A slot 64 in the seat 62 enables an extensible connection to be made between the rod 58 and the seat 62 by means of a bolt 66. At one end of the shaft 42 is an arm 74, which is integral with the arm 52, or separate and keyed to the shaft 42, the arm 74 engaging at its free end a turnbuckle 80 which, by holding the arm 74 in the position shown, holds the roll 36a through the parts 52, 58, 62. 32, 34, against the strip S on the roll 4. The roll 36b may be employed instead of the roll 36a by loosening the turnbuckle 80 and disengaging the arm 74 to permit counterclockwise rotation of the arms 52, e.g. by hoisting on a shackle 56, and so to rotate the arms 30 counter-clockwise about the pins 28, the links 46 ensuring similar rotation of the latches 38 which disengage the carriers 34 and allow the shaft 32 to be rotated, e.g., by applying a wrench to the squared end 84 of the shaft 32, to substitute the roll 36b for the roll 36a.
