Abstract
836,141. Discharge apparatus. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. May 3, 1957 [July 27, 1956], No. 14108/57. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XI] Apparatus for heating a crucible (see Group XI) includes an annular directly or indirectly heated cathode 21 surrounding a crucible 15 and a glow discharge is set up between them, argon being supplied through a pipe 27<SP>1</SP> to maintain such a pressure, e.g. a few microns in a chamber 11 containing the crucible and cathode as to supply ions, which prevent the glow discharge passing into an arc and tend to neutralise the space charge. The cathode 21 is surrounded by heat shields 47. The walls of the chamber 11 may be of conducting material and if maintained at cathode potential serve as focusing electrodes.
