A hand-operated bar bending machine of the kind having a base-plate 10 supporting a clamping device 12 for gripping the bar 11 to be bent at a point close to the place at which the bend is to be made, a bending member 14 pivotally mounted on the base-plate 10, and an operating lever 72 arranged to press the bending member against the bar and bend the bar about the clamping device 12 is characterized in that the clamping device comprises a fixed jaw 18 mounted on the base-plate and a removable jaw 26, one end of which is fashioned in the form of a hook which fits over an abutment on the fixed jaw. A flat bar 11 to be bent is clamped between a jaw 18 fixed on a base-plate 10 and a jaw 26 removably mounted on the base-plate. The jaw 18 has a part 40 extending towards and beyond the jaw 26 to provide a hook or step against which a part 42 of the jaw 26 may abut, a locating spigot 38 on the jaw 26 also enters a hole in the part 40. The jaw 26 includes a barengaging face-plate 28 adjustable by screws 44, 46 on webs 30, 32 joined by a connecting-plate 34 adapted to overhang in the form of a hook, a face-plate 20 of the jaw 18 so that the movable jaw 26 is thus positioned by the hooked parts 40 and 34. The part of the bar 11 projecting from the jaw is bent by a member 14 comprising a bar-engaging face-plate 16 on a plate 48 pivotally mounted on the base-plate at 13 slightly to underlie the fixed jaw 18 and also held down on the base-plate by a bolt 56 guided in an arcuate slot 58 in the base-plate. The member 14 is moved in steps about its pivot 13 by repeated operation of a handle 72 forming one arm of a bell-crank, pivoted at 74 to the plate 48, whose other arm 78 is pivoted to a spring-urged pawl 80 engaging ratchet teeth 82 on the base-plate 10. A second pawl 88 on the base-plate 48 prevents return of the bending member 14 after each step when the handle is returned.
