836,023. Testing resistance to impact of resilient materials. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Aug. 2, 1957 [Aug. 7, 1956], No. 24233/56. Class 106(2). A method of and apparatus for testing a resilient material for resistance to impact in which a weight 13 falls freely and effectively impiriges through resilient means 16 on a rigid base 10 lying on the material 11 to be tested, a measure of the maximum deflection of the resilient means 16 being recorded. As shown for testing packing materials for resistance tc impact, the weight 13 slides on a column 12 and can be held by a release mechanism 14 and then allowed to fall on a platform 21 also slidable on the column 12. The platform 21 is connected to the lower end of a spring 16, the upper end of which is secured by an adjustable nut and bolt 18, 17 to a distance-piece 15 resting on the column 12. The column 12 is held vertical in use by securing the release mechanism 14 in a suitable stand and an indication of the extension of the spring 16 is given by an indicator ring 23 which grips the column 12 but does not impede downward movement of the platform 19. The base 10 may be fitted with a spherical portion 25, see Fig. 3, or the column 12 may be connected with the base 10 by a ball and socket joint, thus allowing the column 12 to be maintained vertical. In a second embodiment, the spring may be attached to the underside of a weight which is allowed to fall freely. The apparatus can also be used to test oil and other fluid lubricants in which case the base is in the form of a float and rests on the liquid being tested.
