835,879. Digital-electric calculating-apparatus. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. April 9, 1957 [April 24, 1956], No. 12524/56. Class 106 (1). A serial digital computer has an arrangement for deriving word timing pulses and syllable timing pulses from a single waveform. As described. for a machine having a word length of 36 digits comprising three syllables of twelve digits each, the waveform, Fig. 3, which may be derived from a track on a magnetic drum is sent to the circuit shown in Fig. 4 wherein a onedigit delay 1 and AND gate 2 provide an output PO in synchronism with a p<SP>0</SP> pulse when the p<SP>0</SP> pulse is preceded by a p<SP>11</SP> pulse, consecutive P <SP>11</SP> and p<SP>0</SP> pulses being indicative of a word time. 'The AND gate 3 provides a p<SP>0</SP> output at syllable times by gating the incident waveform with pulses obtained from a syllable-length delay line 4-15. Digit timing pulses may be obtained by tapping the delay line.
