Abstract

835,741. Electron beam deflecting apparatus. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. June 14, 1956 [June 23, 1955(2)], No. 18404/56. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXII] Electromagnetic deflecting coils for cathoderay tubes comprise saddle coils 2 and 3, which are preferably cosine coils, for horizontal deflection of the electron beam, and two oppositely disposed toroidal coils 5 and 6 mounted on a ferromagnetic yoke 4 surrounding the saddle coils, for vertical deflection of the beam. Each of the toroidal coils overlaps some of each of the two groups of longitudinal conductors of one of the saddle coils and preferably covers an arc which subtends an angle of at least 90 degrees at the centre of the coils. The marginal sharpness of the picture on the cathode-ray tube screen is improved both by the use of cosine coils and by the fact that the yoke may be relatively small as the crosssectional area of the windings of the coils 2 and 3 diminishes in the region of overlap sufficiently to accommodate the toroidal coils. The saddle coils may be disposed within a hollow plastic cylindrical member 9 having indentations 10 in which the yoke and toroidal coils are disposed. The yoke may be manufactured in two or four portions which are held together by means of a metal band 11, the whole being coated with an insulating layer.
