835,707. Picking hops. BURR, E. H., and HOLMES, S. G. Aug. 26, 1957 [Aug. 28, 1956], No. 26277/56. Class 6(3). Relates to a method of picking hops wherein the bines are cut off a few feet from the ground while their top ends are still attached to the overhead superstructure in the hop-alley and the cut ends of adjacent bines on either side of the alley are attached to transverse bars so that by driving a vehicle along the alley to collect the bars, the bines will be dragged down off the superstructure. According to the invention the vehicle comprises a chassis 3 having a bine-receiving compartment 4 at the rear, a bar-arresting structure 12, 14 arranged above and forwardly of the compartment and a barreceiving rack 8 below and forwardly of the arresting structure. The compartment comprises mesh sides attached to uprights 5 and struts 6. The bar-arresting structure forms the back of the rack 8 which is U-shaped, with the rear uprights 12 extended upwardly to carry hook-like projections 14. The rack is detachable from the chassis when full. The front uprights 7 of the chassis carry a pair of divergent guides 16, the upper parts of which are bridged by a metal sheet 17. The bars, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprise light tubes having pairs of upstanding clips in which the cut bine-ends are engaged.
