Abstract

Cellulose-containing impurities such as cellulose acetate, regenerated cellulose and/or natural cellulose, are removed from wool and woollen fabrics by treating the wool or mixed woollen fabric with anhydrous silicon tetrachloride or anhydrous boron trichloride, with substantial exclusion of moisture, and then removing the chloride from the treated wool or woollen fabric and removing the impurities mechanically in such a manner that the fibre structure of the wool is retained. The anhydrous chloride may be used in the form of a gas or vapour or dissolved in an inert solvent, e.g. an alkyl halide such as trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform or perchlorethylene, tetrahydrofurane, dioxane, ethyl alcohol, benzine or benzene, which may also be in the form of a gas or vapour. The boron trichloride and silicon tetrachloride may also be used in the form of their oxonium addition compounds with ethers, which may be prepared by mixing the anhydrous chlorides with suitable ethers in an inert medium, e.g. a halogenated hydrocarbon. The wool or woollen fabric is preferably treated with the anhydrous chloride in a quantity of 0.5 to 4% in relation to the weight of the textile fibres for 10-30 minutes at a temperature in the range from room temperature up to 110 DEG C., squeezed and dried at 70-100 DEG C. and the impurities removed by beating.
