Abstract

<PICT:0835412/III/1> <PICT:0835412/III/2> A thermoplastic container, e.g. a collapsible tube, has a protective coating 14 on the whole of its interior surface except for a marginal area 15 at one end where the container is to be sealed. Fig. 1 shows a cylindrical polyethylene container with a plug closure 16 fused to the body wall 10 over the non-coated area 15. In Fig. 4, the non-coated area is folded and sealed by a clip 21. The coating may be polyvinyl alcohol, nitrocellulose, or water solutions or emulsions of soluble polymers. The internal surface of the container may be pre-treated by an oxidizing flame, oxidizing liquids or gases or a high voltage corona discharge to enhance adhesion of the coating. The coating may be applied by filling the inverted container to a determined level and allowing it to drain through the open head 12, by spraying through an axially moving or rotatable nozzle, or by rollers, brushes, &c. The part to be left uncoated may be covered by a collar during coating.
