Class 100(2) A planing machine 1 for the inner concave surfaces of arcuate stereo plates is pro- - vided with a locking plate 10 which is associated with linkages in the form of spring influenced toggle devices 14, 17, which can be straightened against the action of supporting springs 24, to raise the locking plate. The locking, plate 10, is located opposite a. fixed supporting plate, and the stereo plate is slid over a table 6 on to the two supporting plates, the plate 10 being in its lowermost position. The plate 10 is attached to the inner side of a carrier bar 12. which is guided for vertical movement on pins 13 fixed to the abutment 2. Pivoted at 15 and depending from the bar 12 are toggle links 14 which are pivoted at their lower ends to pairs of further toggle links 17. The links 17 are pivoted to shoes 18 having vertical guide pins 20 arranged to slide through adjusting screws 21 located on supports 22. Surrounding the guide pins are compression springs 24. Pivoted to the lower ends of the links 14 and upper ends of'the links 17 is a bar 25 provided with a pin 30 which co-operates with a slot 31 in an arm 29 extending from a shaft 26. Provided on the shaft 26 is an operating handle 32 which, when turned from position B to position C, causes the locking plate to be raised to hold the stereo plate .supported thereby against abutment 2 for planing. A locating pin 33 is provided on the handle 33 to locate the handle in the correct position for holding the toggle links 14, 17 -in their straightened condition.
