Abstract

938,622. Pattern grading machines. WILLCOX & GIBBS SEWING MACHINE CO. Sept. 29, 1961 [June 5, 1961], No. 35094/61. Class 141. A pattern grading machine comprises a housing 14 with walls 12 through which project two groups of paper manipulating arms 16. Each arm has a chuck 17 in which are mounted two flat resilient paper-gripping spring members 19, 20 with teeth 22, 23 which are brought into gripping relation by a sliding sleeve 27. Corresponding arms in each of the two groups grip the edge of the same sheet of paper 25 in the pile with the master pattern on top. The centre arm 33, 33A in each group is fixed to the housing by a mounting bar 37F and the other arms are each slidably mounted in a carrier 37. Pins 38 on each slidable arm move in the slot 39 of an actuator bar 40 which is pivoted to each mounting bar 37F. Arms 30, 30A are provided with racks 41, 41a which co-operate with pinions 42a, 42b connected to operating knobs 43, 44 for driving the actuator bar. The pinions are detachably connected at 45 so that each group may be operated for turning the papers about a vertical axis during blending of curved edges such as 69, 70. A scale 48 may be provided. To provide for movement in a direction perpendicular to the arms the carriers for the arms are secured in pairs to connectors 50-56 which are slidable on the base except for the connector 53 joining the mounting bars 37F which is fixed to the base. An actuator bar 62 pivoted at 62a to the fixed connector 53 has a slot 61 to receive pins 60 on each connector. The connectors are displaced longitudinally by means of a rack 64 co-operating with a pinion 65 rotated manually by an external knob 67 (Fig. 2, not shown). A longitudinal scale 68 may be provided. The apparatus may be modified as in Fig. 9 if it is necessary to have some sizes differing in non-linear proportion. In order to modify the movements of arms 30A, 35A and 36A a transverse pivot-bar 71 is mounted on a connector 72 driven by a pin 63 in the slot 61 of the pivotbar 62. Auxiliary slotted actuator bars 74 and 79 are connected to pivot-bar 71 by pins 76 and 81 and are driven by a pin 77 on the arm 30A. Specification 938,623 is referred to.
