Abstract

928,559. Feeding sheets. G. M. PFAFF A.G. June 8, 1961 [June 23, 1960], No. 20669/61. Class 100 (1). Apparatus for picking-up pieces of cloth or paper and feeding them to a sewing or other machine includes a number of pick-up elements having adhesive-surfaced ends which are projected through spaced openings in a plate, disposed parallel to the cloth &c. pieces, and are then withdrawn so that the pieces are removed from the elements by the plate. As shown, an L-shaped frame comprising a baseplate 8 and vertical plate 6 is secured to a pair of slides mounted for manual or automatic vertical movement on posts 2 which are connected by cross-bars 3 and provided with rollers 4 which engage a top and a bottom rail 1, whereby the frame can be moved from pick-up to depositing positions. In the pick-up position shown, the plate 8 is disposed over a stack of pieces of cloth 40 on a table 41 provided with rods 42 slidable in holes in a fixed frame 43, the table being urged upwardly by springs 44. A sleeve 11, slidable on a vertical post 10 secured to the plate 8 and urged upwardly by a spring 20, has a pair of lateral arms each carrying an arm 13 having six extension arms 13a, 13b, 13c. The arms 13a carry the supply and take-up spools 14, 15 of an adhesive tape 16 which is passed around rollers 17, 18, 19 on the other arms 13b, 13c. The four rollers 18 are disposed over apertures in the plate 8 so that, when the sleeve 11 and arms 13 are depressed, the rollers pass through the plate to press four portions of adhesive tape 16 on to the top piece of cloth 40. When the frame 6, 8 rises, the top piece 40 is separated from the pile, and the frame can then be transported along the run-ways 1 to a processing station; in this position, the sleeve 11 is allowed to rise, and the cloth piece is stripped from the rollers 18 by the plate 8 as the rollers pass upwardly through the plate apertures. The sleeve 11 is held in the depressed condition by a stop 22 on a cross-rod, which is actuated by a fixed cam-wedge at the processing station, to release the sleeve. Also, at the processing station, a ratchet-operated shaft 29 carrying the take-up spool 15 is operated by a lever 32 engaging a fixed rod, as the sleeve 11 rises, whereby the tapes 16 are advanced to expose fresh portions thereof to the cloth pieces. In modifications, the pick-up elements may be fingers which are coated with adhesive each time they are retracted, or may be tubes supplied with adhesive through spring-urged ball valves in the ends of the tubes.
