Abstract
High-strength threads are made by spinning viscose in a precipitation bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate and then stretching or finally decomposing the threads in a hot bath, the acid concentration in the precipitation bath being not greater than, and not more than 2% below the percentage of alkali in the viscose, the total proportion of salts in the precipitation bath being from 10-23% by weight, based on the weight of the said bath and the ratio of the percentages of sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate in the said bath being from 0.9-2.5 Part of the zinc sulphate may be replaced by ferrous sulphate, the proportion of zinc sulphate being then not less than 3% of the weight of the precipitation bath, and the salt sum and salt quotient are then calculated on the sodium sulphate and the combined weights of zinc and ferrous sulphates. Preferably, the temperature of the precipitation bath is from 30-80 DEG C., and especially from 30-45 DEG C. The viscose and (or) the precipitation bath may contain known additives, e.g. primary amines, polyamines, quaternary ammonium bases, thiocarbamates, imidazoles, thiazoles, polyethylene glycols, and condensation products of ethylene oxide with fatty amines, fatty acids, fatty alcohols or phenols.
