Abstract

Leather for use in the production of injection moulded articles of leather and synthetic resin is tanned by a process in which the animal skin is first soaked for about 2 hours in an aqueous liquor containing the following components in the given percentages based on the weight of the water as 100%: NaCl-10%, K2SO4.Al2 (SO4)3 -0.7%, H2SO4 0.5% and ferric acid 0.5%, the skin then being soaked again for about 2 hours in a mixture of the above liquor with a second liquor containing the following components in the given percentages based on the weight of water in the original liquor as 100% : Na2Cr2O7 -2.5%, conc. H2SO4-0.8%, NaCl-7.0%, H2O-10%, glucose-1.5%, Na2S2O3-5%. The following liquid mixture is then added and the skin again soaked for about 2 hours, the basis for the percentages being again based on the weight of water in the first liquor being reckoned as 100%. Na2Cr2O7-2.5%, H2SO4-0.8%, H2O-3%. 1% of sulphuric acid is then added and after another hour 7% of Na2S2O3 and 10% water are mixed and progressively added to the bath, preferably in three batches at 30 minute intervals. In a subsequent step, Tanios R.W agent may be mixed in and the leather subjected to the following finishing treatment: water washing-dyeing-addition of fat and/or oil-sun drying-combing-stretching on a plate-coating with gloss-drying-polishing-forming-ironing. The leather is placed in an injection moulding machine and synthetic resin, e.g. polystyrene, polyethylene, nylon, or polyvinyl chloride, is injected to combine with and set in the fibrous structure of the leather.
