Abstract

834,731. Launching aircraft. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Jan. 30, 1958 [Feb. 6, 1957], No. 3113/58. Class 4. A composite aircraft designed for vertical take-off comprises a carrier aerodyne powered by at least one turbo-jet and designed for vertical take-off and landing, and an aeroplane externally and detachably secured to the carrier aerodyne, the carrier aerodyne being relatively light compared with said aeroplane. In the embodiment an aircraft 3 powered by ram-jet engines 24 located at the wing-tips is launched vertically by an auxiliary aircraft 1 connected thereto by releasable fastenings (not shown) and powered by two turbo-jet engines each having a propulsion nozzle 9 provided with jet deflecting means 11 for deflecting the jet to an axis which passes vertically through the combined centre of gravity G of the two aircraft 1 and 3. Aircraft 1 has a delta wing 2 whereby it is enabled to fly back to the launching base after the two aircraft have separated in flight. The aircraft are, when connected together, supported on the launching platform by legs 5 attached to the extremities of the tail surfaces of aircraft 1 and a further leg 6 pivoted at 13 to the structure of aircraft 1 for swinging movement under the control of a jack 6a for the purpose of inclining the aircraft before take-off to ensure that the deflected jet is directed vertically downwards. Further support is provided by a leg 7 secured to the fin of aircraft 3. To enable the aircraft 1 to land vertically on its return to the launching base, it is provided with a retractable leg 14, strutted at 17 and pivotally mounted on an axially-movable pivot 15 controlled by a jack 19. The fuel system comprises a main tank in aircraft 3 and a small tank in aircraft 1 of capacity sufficient to ensure the return of the aircraft after separation. The engines of aircraft 1 are supplied with fuel from the small tank and this is replenished continuously from the large tank through pipe connections which seal off automatically when the aircraft separate.
