Abstract

An organic resinous coating is removed from an aluminium or aluminium alloy surface by treating the surface first with an acid comprising nitric acid and thereafter with a solution of a stripping composition containing a phenol and/or a chlorinated hydrocarbon. If necessary, this sequence of operations may be repeated. The acid may be nitric acid alone or nitric acid plus chromic acid, and it may be used in combination with organic solvents. Examples of phenols and chlorinated hydrocarbons are, respectively, phenol, cresol and xylenol; and monochlor-, dichlor-, and trichlor-benzene, trichlortoluene, methylene chloride, ethylene dichloride, methyl chloroform, and dichlor-, trichlor-, and perchlor-ethylene. The stripping composition may also contain a detergent emulsifier, e.g. an alkali metal (including ammonium), amine or alkanolamine salt of an organic acid, such as potassium oleate or ammonium oleate and excess ammonia, or a non-ionic condensation product of ethylene oxide with aromatic materials and fatty alcohols; and an inhibitor, e.g. sodium phosphate or sodium chromate. Any resinous coating remaining after the treatment may be removed by light vapour-blasting. The removal of phenolic resin coatings is referred to.
