Abstract
834,462. Indicating-apparatus. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Feb. 21, 1958 [Feb. 21, 1957], No. 5954/57. Class 106 (4). An indicating-instrument with its movement 1 for moving a pointer 2 over a scale 11 in accordance with a variable is mounted in a housing 8 so as to be rotatably adjustable about the axis of the pointer 2 and an associated set-pointer 47 is independently adjustable about the same axis. The movement is mounted on a disc 4 integral with a disc 5 and cylindrical casing 10 which carries the scale 11. The disc 5 slides in an annular groove in a wall 7 of the housing 8 and the disc 4 carries a gearwheel 9 meshing with a gear-wheel 13 on a shaft 12 with a slot at the front for making the rotatable adjustment of the instrument. The set pointer 47 is carried by an arm 45 secured to a ring 16 integral with a further cylindrical casing 15 rotatable about the inner one 10. The pointer 47 can be set centrally on to a predetermined position either side by adjusting a knob 39 to one of three positions determined by a detent plate 40 co-operating with a ball 42. A crank-arm 43 turned by the knob 39 carries a pin 44 which is embraced by plates 32, 33, carried by rings 29, 30 rotatable on the casing 15 and interconnected by a spring 35 which causes the plates 32, 33 to follow the pin 44 and also to take along with them a pin 37 on the ring 16 at least to the limits determined by the radial end faces 20, 21 of a recess in the periphery of the ring 16. These faces 20, 21 co-operate with pins 22, 24 carried by annular gear-wheels 17, 18 which can be set in predetermined positions through gear-wheels 27, 28 on slotted shafts 26, 25. In a moving coil instrument used for measuring jet pipe temperatures on a turbine engined aircraft, where there are three critical temperatures to watch, namely the highest permitted in crusing, climbing and take-off, the knob 39 is set to intermediate position bringing the pointer 47 vertical and the shaft 12 is adjusted to turn the movement 1 and scale 11 to bring the scale division representing the highest temperature permitted, during climbing into register with the pointer 47, the other positions being set through the shafts 26, 25 when the knob 39 is set to its off-centre positions.
