Abstract

555,155. Indicating-apparatus. JACKSON, L., MELLERSH-. (Reece Buttonhole Machine Co.). Feb. 4, 1942, No. 1481. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Group XVIII] A wrist watch has a scale graduated in distance and a hand movable thereon at a speed proportional to elapsed time, the spacing of the graduations and the speed of the hand being relatively adjustable. The watch has a central dial portion 15 and a surrounding time scale 18 graduated in minutes and hours with co-operating hands 16, 17 and 19. Disposed concentric with the time scale 18 is a combined distance and speed scale 20. The scale 20, which is extensible and contractible, comprises a lazy-tong structure, certain of the joints of which carry indicia elements 26 and numeral tabs 27 constituting the scale graduations. One end of the scale 20 is fixed at the zero point of the time scale 18 while the other end is attached to a bezel or ring 21 rotatably mounted on the watch case. The elements 26 comprise pointed strips pivoted on the innermost joints of the lazy-tong links and formed with slots to receive the pivots of the outermost joints. In the setting operation the ground speed is estimated and the bezel 21 is rotated to bring the appropriate index element 26 opposite to a mark 43 in the time scale 18. To adapt the instrument for a wide range of ground speeds, two time scales differently graduated may be provided to co-operate with two pointers driven at a speed commensurate with the scale graduations. The pointers may be differently coloured and would be read against the numbered tabs 27 on the adjustable scale 20, which numbers would have coloured units digits corresponding to the higher range. In a modified form, to increase the accuracy of adjustment of the scale 20 a series of radial arms 54, Fig. 9, are mounted on a central pivot with their outer ends attached to the zero point of the scale and to equally spaced pivots of the lazy-tong links. These arms and outer pivots are further connected by crossed links 60 as shown so that equi-angular displacement is preserved throughout the system.
