Abstract

834,255. Modifying metallic surfaces. NATIONAL VULCANISED FIBRE CO. Aug. 10, 1956 [Nov. 2, 1955], No. 24540/56. Class 82(2) [Also in Groups VIII and XXXV] The underside of a web of copper foil 10, Fig. 1, is oxidized by its treatment with an aqueous agent containing sodium chlorite and sodium hydroxide in order to improve its bonding with a dielectro material for forming a printed circuit. The strip 10 is fed from a roll 12 by rolls 14 across treating apparatus 16, and via idling squeegee rolls 18 across washing and rinsing apparatus 20, and via idling rolls 22 through drying apparatus 24, and is rewound at 28. The liquid treating agent is fed by a pump 44 from a tank 30 to a distributer head 50. Liquid flows through rows of orifices in the head, Fig. 4, on to the underside of the strip, and it runs down the sides of the head back to the tank. The rows of orifices are at an acute angle to the longitudinal strip movement and provide a pool of liquid over which the strip is fed. A number of similar but snorter heads 58, each associated with a tank 56, are provided for the flow of rinsing water to wash off the liquid agent. A pump 64 supplies the end head 58 with water which is returned to its tank, and additional pumps 72, 80 supply the remaining heads from adjacent tanks. An electronically controlled mechanism (see Group XXXV) is described for controlling lateral movement of the strip.
