833,948. Joint-making packing; stuffing- boxes. COMPAGNIE DE PONT-A-MOUSSON. March 7, 1958 [March 13, 1957], No. 7368/58. Classes 122 (3) and 122 (5). An elastic sealing ring G1, Fig. 1, is reinforced by at least one endless spring Aa which is formed of coils of periodically varying shape, the outer similar-shaped coil portions 3 of the coils being flush with the outer surface of the ring and superposed one on another, and interconnected by the inner coil portions 4 which are embedded in the ring. As shown in Fig. 3, applied to a pipe joint, a reinforcement Aa is moulded into each of three corners of a rubber body 1, in order to prevent extrusion of the rubber through the clearance between the pipe T1 and socket T2 and other parts of the joint. The reinforcement Aa, Fig. 4, may be in the form of a rustless or plastic-covered wire spring in which the alternate coils 3, 4 are of circular and oval shape, the parts d, e, f of adjacent coils being in abutting relationship while a gap is formed between the portions d, h, f of the coils 3 thus allowing the flow of rubber therebetween during the moulding process. If desired the oval coils may be disposed at various angular positions about the axis of the coils 3. In modifications, the reinforcement may be formed (a) solely from oval coils which deviate alternately to the right and left, (b) from alternate groups of circular coils 3 and oval coils 4, (c) from square coils alternating with crossed triangular-shaped coils, and (d) from alternate semi-circular and circular coils. The surface of the wire forming the coils may be knurled or grooved.
