Abstract

A coating comprising a silicone and polytetrafluorethylene in conjunction is applied to the clean metal surface of a metal article. The surface may be cleaned, e.g. by sand blasting or nitric acid treatment. A layer of silicone may be applied first, followed by a layer of P.T.F.E., or a mixture of the two substances may be applied. Preferably a plurality of coats is applied, each consisting of a mixture, the proportion of silicone being reduced from 50% in the first coat to 5% in the top coat. The P.T.F.E. is applied as an aqueous emulsion; the silicone may be made into an emulsion and mixed therewith or if applied separately may be applied as a solution in an organic solvent. Following application, which may be by brushing or spraying, the surface is dried then heated to cure the silicone and coalesce the particles of P.T.F.E. Suitable silicones are methyl-, phenyl-, or methylphenyl-silicone resins in which the R : Si ratio is less than 1.8 : 1. The process may be applied to steel or aluminium cooking utensils, vessels in which chemical reactions are performed, stirrers, or moulds for use with rubber or plastics.ALSO:A coating comprising a silicone and polytetrafluorethylene in conjunction is applied to the clean metal surface of a metal article.
