Abstract

The invention comprises tryptamine N-tryptamino carboxylates of the formula <FORM:0833866/IV (b)/1> where R is hydrogen or a substituent that is preferably halogen (e.g. chlorine alkoxy (e.g.), methoxy), alkyl or aralkyl, which are prepared by passing carbon dioxide through a solution of a tryptamine of the formula <FORM:0833866/IV (b)/2> in an inert solvent, such as ethanol or methylene chloride, which will precipitate the resulting carboxylate. The process may be employed for purifying tryptamines, the resulting tryptamine N-tryptamino carboxylates yielding pure tryptamines on heating.
